Kimi Antonelli topped the only free practice session at the Canadian Grand Prix, beating Mercedes team-mate George Russell by over a tenth of a second at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.
Lewis Hamilton rounded out the top three in Montreal in a thrice-disrupted — and extended — hour of running, following three red flags.
First, Liam Lawson’s Racing Bulls ground to a halt with a hydraulics issue, which saw four minutes added to the session.
Then, Alex Albon unfortunately struck a marmot. Replays suggest that the Williams driver crashed whilst trying to avoid the rodent, which is native to North America (as well as Europe and Asia).
That incident caused the FIA to add 15 more minutes onto the running, for a combined total of 19 minutes.
Lawson was subsequently called to the stewards for a post-session investigation into why his CDS (clutch disengagement system) did not work in his VCARB 03.
Esteban Ocon triggered the third and final stoppage after he ripped the nose off his Haas with only a matter of minutes to go.
