Esteban Ocon has avoided a penalty at the Canadian Grand Prix despite leaving the pit lane during practice when the light was red.
The Haas driver was found to have exited the pit lane 1.11 seconds after it closed, but the stewards at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve established mitigating circumstances.
Having viewed the positioning/marshalling system data, video, timing, telemetry and in-car video, they determined that it was “almost certain” that Ocon would not have seen the light change from green to red.
The official stewards’ decision document confirmed: “The timing data shows the car crossed the line 1.11 seconds after the end of the session.
“However, video evidence shows it is almost certain that the driver could not have seen the light change from green to red due to his close proximity to the line at the pit exit.
“Therefore, although a breach of regulation was committed, in view of the mitigating circumstances of the driver being unable to see the red light, no penalty is applied.”
