2026 Indy 500 facing potential thunderstorm threat

2026 Indy 500 weather forecast

The 2026 Indy 500 could be impacted by thunderstorms this weekend, according to current weather forecasts.

As of 07:30 ET on Thursday, 21st May, three days out from the 200-lap race, the National Weather Service is predicting a 50% chance of showers and thunderstorms after 14:00 local time.

The race at The Brickyard is due for a green flag at 12:45 ET, and usually takes around three hours to complete.

On Saturday, heavy rain is set to hit Indianapolis, with this cell moving from southwest to northeast – and is the same one which could impact F1’s Canadian Grand Prix on Sunday.

That race is due for a 16:00 ET start, meaning any potential delay at Indianapolis, whether caused by caution periods or by weather, will cause the first-ever overlap between the two events following the decision to move Canada forward in the calendar from this season.

If the rain does hit the Indy 500 as current weather forecasts predict, it will sweep across the track from right-to-left as the drivers see it on the pit-straight, which runs directly south.
