Russell beats Norris to win Montreal sprint race after clash with Antonelli | 2026 Canadian Grand Prix sprint race report

George Russell claimed maximum points in the sprint race at Montreal after clashing with his team mate and championship rival.

Andrea Kimi Antonelli went off twice on lap six as the pair disputed the lead, and slipped to third place behind Lando Norris at the finish. Russell’s win cuts the gap between them to 18 points.

The short run to the first corner at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve produced the most straightforward start of the season so far. The top 10 drivers held their positions with the exception of Lewis Hamilton, who picked off Oscar Piastri for fourth place behind Norris.

Russell soaked up pressure from Antonelli over the opening laps, then began to edge clear of his team mate. However he ran too deep at the turn 10 hairpin on the fifth lap, handing Antonelli a clear run at him.

Antonelli looked at the outside as they approached turn 13, then dropped back and attacked again on the outside of turn one. He appeared to get significantly alongside but Russell held his line and the pair made contact, which sent Antonelli skittering across the run-off area. Antonelli protested his team mate had failed to leave him adequate space under the racing guidelines but the stewards declined to investigate.

Halfway around the lap Antonelli gained rapidly on Russell approaching turn eight. He made for the inside but skated off again, and this time lost second place to Norris.

The trio finished in that order, though Antonelli made an unsuccessful bid to pass Norris on the outside of turn one as the final lap began. That resulted in his third off-track moment.

Piastri regained fourth place from Hamilton at the end of the race, squeezing the Ferrari driver at turn 14 as he came by. That allowed Charles Leclerc to pass his team mate, then attack Piastri, whom he came close to passing on the line.

Max Verstappen took seventh after a largely uneventful race. The stewards examined whether he failed to react correctly to yellow flags, but ruled he was compliant. Arvid Lindblad inherited the final point after Isack Hadjar had to pit with a power unit problem.

Sergio Perez crossed the line 11th for Cadillac behind Franco Colapinto and Carlos Sainz Jnr. However a penalty for an incident with Liam Lawson dropped him back to 14th.
