Mercedes radio messages as Toto Wolff tries to calm Kimi Antonelli

Cody Rhodes in

Kimi Antonelli made his feelings clear over the radio during a pulsating Canadian Sprint that ultimately resulted in Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff being forced to twice respond to calm him down.

Wolff only ever chooses to speak up when he feels it requires his influence to appease any given situation, and this was one of those times at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

Antonelli was left far from happy with team-mate George Russell on lap six of the 23-lap event, believing his team-mate forced him off the circuit as he made a move around the outside into Turn 1.

Here, ApexF1News looks at the exchanges that took place during the race and after the chequered flag.

“That was very naughty! That should be a penalty. I was alongside the mirror.” – Antonelli, referring to what happened at Turn 1, believing he had the advantage on the approach, only for a minor collision to take place and the 19-year-old taking to the grass.

“Let’s just keep it cool.” – The response of race engineer Pete Bonington in a bid to placate the 19-year-old Italian.

“So let’s just get this back under control Kimi, focus on [Lando] Norris, focus on the driving.” – More words from Bonington soon after.

“I don’t care. He pushed me off.” – Antonelli was clearly far from happy, and allowing his emotions to start to get the better of him.

“Kimi, concentrate on the driving please, and not on the radio moaning.” – Wolff steps in for the first time.

“If we’re going to race like this, then good to know.” – After being told “That’s the chequered flag” by Bonington, Antonelli makes his feelings clear again.

“Kimi, now is the first time to talk about this. We talk about this internally and not on the radio. Okay.” – Wolff again intervenes, making clear Antonelli’s views are not for public consumption.
