George Russell fumes after painful Canadian GP retirement

Cody Rhodes in

George Russell did not hide his frustration after a sudden retirement from the Canadian Grand Prix.

Following a tense battle with his team-mate Kimi Antonelli in the opening half of the race, Russell suddenly pulled over on lap 30.

Prior to the retirement, the Mercedes duo were fighting nose-to-tail and swapped positions on multiple occasions as they resumed their battle from the sprint race.

Russell was running half a second in front of Antonelli before he skipped across the grass at Turn 8 following a sudden issue with his power unit.

The dejected Mercedes driver threw the headrest from the car before banging the W17 with his hands.

It marked his first retirement since the 2024 British Grand Prix, and gives a huge opportunity to team-mate Antonelli to further extend his championship lead.

Mercedes has confirmed that it was a power unit failure that resulted in Russell’s retirement.
