The FIA has announced it will trial a new rear lights coloured-coded system for power unit derating during practice at the Canadian Grand Prix.
The move by the motorsport governing body comes following feedback from the drivers.
After the test at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, it will revert to the standard rear lights system for the remainder of the weekend in Montreal and assess the next steps following another round of feedback.
The new system will better differentiate between different MGU-K (Motor Generator Unit – Kinetic) states: no longer at full power (blue), fully cut (purple), and super clip (yellow).
Currently, those modes are all indicated by a flashing red light pattern.
As the Canadian Grand Prix is a sprint weekend, there is just one free practice session, and therefore opportunities to test further are limited.
