Red Bull boss issues clear stance on Toto Wolff-Jos Verstappen talks

Laurent Mekies has issued a clear stance on Jos Verstappen being spotted in the Montreal paddock in conversation with Toto Wolff.

On Thursday during media day ahead of this weekend’s Canadian Grand Prix, Jos was seen sitting with the Mercedes team principal, resulting in the moment quickly going viral on social media.

It instantly sparked rumours among fans that Jos was perhaps holding negotiations regarding Max Verstappen, something Mekies is confident is far from the truth.

The four-time world champion drove a Mercedes-AMG GT3 in last weekend’s Nürburgring 24 Hours, with the 28-year-old maintaining a professional relationship with the German manufacturer.

Mekies brushed off suggestions that the talks between Jos and Wolff were anything other than “completely natural”, insisting there were no games being played between the pair.

Asked what he thought of Jos and Wolff’s conversation, Mekies said: “I tell you what, as much as it may sound exciting to see that from the outside, I really don’t think there is an intention particularly behind.

“If any of these guys wants to have a chat, it’s going to be a story anyway. So, we speak all the time with Max and with Jos.

“It’s completely natural that they can have a conversation with Toto. Max was racing in a Mercedes last week, a GT3.

“So, I genuinely don’t think it’s part of a game plan to get a message or another through.”
