Strong Max Verstappen shows teeth as thrilling Nurburgring 24 Hours nears end

Max Verstappen has delivered another commanding double stint during the Nürburgring 24 Hours, extending the advantage of the #3 Mercedes as the endurance classic enters its final phase.

With just four hours remaining, only two serious contenders appear to remain in the hunt for victory. Verstappen’s machine and its #80 sister car began building a substantial advantage on Saturday evening, establishing themselves as the pace-setters in the gruelling test of man and machine.

Verstappen proved the decisive factor during the overnight hours, before team-mates Jules Gounon and Lucas Auer maintained the momentum with equally impressive stints.

Following a brief rest, the four-time F1 drivers’ champion climbed back into the cockpit at approximately 08:45 local time, inheriting a slender five-second advantage over Luca Stolz.

The German initially managed to match the Dutchman’s early pace, keeping the gap manageable through the opening stages of what would prove to be a crucial battle.

However, once Verstappen found clear air, his superior pace became evident. The Red Bull driver gradually stretched his advantage over both Stolz and team-mate Maro Engel.

By the time Verstappen completed his double stint and returned to the pits, his margin over Engel had grown to more than 30 seconds. The gap represents a significant psychological blow to the #80 Mercedes crew, who now face an uphill battle to close the deficit in the race’s closing stages.

Complications for the sister car were narrowly avoided, with the #80 Mercedes investigated for a potential code 60 violation, which was subsequently dismissed as no further action.

Dani Juncadella has now taken over driving duties from Verstappen, with the Dutchman expected to return for the race’s conclusion.

The Spanish driver faces the crucial task of maintaining the advantage built by his more illustrious team-mate whilst managing the intense pressure of the final few hours.
